She holds a Master of Divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary; a certificate in TESOL (Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages) from Providence Theological Seminary in Otterburne, Canada; a Master of Theology from the Graduate School of Methodist Theological University; and a Bachelor of Theology from Methodist Theological University in Seoul, South Korea. Dr. Hwang is the author of Emergence: A New Blueprint for Christian Education with the Global Generations (forthcoming in 2023). She has also published several book chapters and journal articles in religious education and faith formation. Dr. Hwang is currently the Visiting Assistant Professor of Religious Education and Public Ministry at Chicago Theological Seminary and is an ordained Deacon in the United Methodist Church. We will welcome Dr. Hwang to the Saint Paul community effective July 1, 2023.

He holds a Master of Arts degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Church History and New Testament. His Bachelor of Arts is from Oklahoma Baptist University. Dr. Randolph has published several peer-reviewed articles in Medieval and Reformation history and also has a breadth of knowledge in Global Christianity. He is currently a post-doctoral research associate in the department of religion at Baylor University. We will welcome Dr. Randolph to the Saint Paul community effective July 1, 2023.

- [HLC Continues the Accreditation of Saint Paul](https://www.spst.edu/hlc-continues-the-accreditation-of-saint-paul-school-of-theology/): In September 2022, Saint Paul School of Theology hosted a review team from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), one of Saint Paul’s primary accreditation agencies, as part of the Seminary’s regular reaffirmation cycle.  On November 18, 2022, the Higher Learning Commission notified Saint Paul that the Commission “continued the accreditation of Saint Paul School of Theology with the next Reaffirmation of Accreditation in 2028-2029.”  HLC makes no requests for any follow up or monitoring reports.  President Neil Blair commented, “This extremely positive outcome reflects years of effort by faculty, staff, and trustees. HLC’s decision recognizes the quality of all these efforts.”  In recent years, the Saint Paul Board of Trustees revised its policies and procedures to accord with best governing practices.  The faculty designed and implemented a rigorous program of assessment and evaluation that utilizes data to improve our educational programs.  Saint Paul also benefits from robust financial health and a well-qualified and capable staff that oversees the Seminary’s administrative functions.  These factors combine to make Saint Paul a vibrant institution that adheres to its mission and strives to serve its students.

- [Neil Blair Extends Contract As SPST President](https://www.spst.edu/president-neil-blair-extends-contract/): Leawood, KS – At its meeting on January 28, 2021, the Saint Paul School of Theology Board of Trustees voted unanimously to extend President Neil Blair’s contract to June 30, 2024. President Blair has accepted this contract extension. The board’s action comes at the conclusion of the four-year assessment of the President required by school policy. The Trustees appreciate how President Blair has led the institution from a time of insecurity to one of sound financial stability. The Trustees and President Blair are now committed to establishing a vision for the school to meet the challenges of theological education today and in the near future with the development of communication and management strategies commensurate with that task.

- [Self Love by alumna Dr. Melissa Pearce](https://www.spst.edu/self-love-by-alumna-dr-melissa-pearce/): When my son was in second grade, I received a phone call from his teacher. She relayed to me that she had to repeatedly ask my child to stop talking to his neighboring student. A little perplexed that this behavior had seemed to arise suddenly and did not correlate with his usually quiet demeanor, I asked my son to explain his disruptive pattern. He detailed that the girl who sat next to him kept stealing his school box, and he had to negotiate to get it back to begin any of his work. I advised him that he needed to make his teacher aware of the situation, and he did so the following day.

- [Following God](https://www.spst.edu/following-god/): Almost twenty-two, Sara Martin claimed with confidence and boldness how the question posed to her at Youth Force -- “Have you ever considered ministry as a vocation?” -- changed her life.  At the age of 16, she had not thought about full-time ministry, but the seed was planted, and Sara began to wonder if “maybe there were places in the church where I could use my gifts and talents,” and affirmations of these wonderings began to emerge.
- [A Statement on the Police Killing of George Floyd](https://www.spst.edu/a-statement-on-the-police-killing-of-george-floyd/): We are dismayed and outraged about the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis by the lethal force of Officer Derek Chauvin. Floyd had been handcuffed and pushed to the ground, whereupon Officer Chauvin forcibly pressed down on Floyd's neck for eight minutes as depicted in an independent video of the scene. In spite of Floyd stating repeatedly that he could not breathe, the officer did not relent, and Floyd subsequently died.

- [OIMC Immersion Experience](https://www.spst.edu/oimc-immersion-experience/): The immersion began with an informational session on the OIMC in Oklahoma. This was led by OIMC Superintendent Dr. David Wilson who guided the entire experience. The immersion group included people from all over the country, including Louisiana, Massachusetts, Texas, and Illinois. The group alone had an immense impact on how the immersion changed my perceptions of the OIMC and the Native community in general.

I am sending out this communication as a reminder that Saint Paul School of Theology is blessed to be in ministry in the name of Jesus Christ and to help others respond to God’s call. Our work as faculty and staff is to provide excellence in theological and practical education for ALL persons called and capable to attend.   As a seminary, we were founded by the Methodist Church, now the United Methodist Church. We are also a seminary that offers classes and experiences to folks from many denominations and faith walks, not just United Methodists. Saint Paul School of Theology will continue to reach out to diverse communities who desire theological education. Our prayers are with the United Methodist Church as they approach General Conference 2020. We remember the many other denominations and organizations who have, or will, travel a similar journey.   The United Methodist Church happens to be my church from the cradle. I pray for it to always be Christ to the world with arms wide open and unconditional love for all people. I am excited as we journey together as a seminary that is stable and changing at the same time. It makes me smile with anticipation to think what Christ may be calling each of us to discover around the next curve! - [Advent: Vulnerable Expectation](https://www.spst.edu/advent-vulnerable-expectation/): A Note from Dr. Melissa Pearce, Director of Alumni and Partner Relations:   Hello Alumni! Saint Paul wants to hear from more of you, so we are now adding an alumni-authored Devotional to the newsletter each month. Please let me know if you are interested in being a guest writer by emailing me at melissa.pearce@spst.edu. As an alumna myself, I decided to take the plunge and write the inaugural piece.   My role at Saint Paul is all about relationships. It is centered around connection – meeting alumni, hearing their stories, telling their stories and finding ways to help resource the ministries of our graduates. As I explored the idea of Advent and the awaiting heart, I decided to center it on the idea of relationship. What does a babe in a manger have to do with connection?   Several summers ago, my husband, my son, and I were hankering for Baskin Robbins. We were standing in line waiting to place our order when I noticed a man in his late twenties, sporting a baseball cap and missing his left arm, marked his place in the queue behind us.    I quickly turned my attention back to the ice cream, and as I debated over mint chocolate chip or butter pecan, I heard my five-year-old son’s voice, “Hey, can I ask you a question?” I thought he was about to request a two-dipped cone and I was perched to respond with the usual “one will do just fine.” However, this is what I heard: “Did you lose your arm in a lightsaber fight?” What? It took me a moment to register what just happened – my son had just asked a stranger if his missing arm was the mark of a Star Wars battle gone wrong.    I had no immediate response to this other than embarrassment. How did my son not know that you do not just point out someone’s disability? I cringed inside and braced myself for any number of negative reactions. I was prepared at best for this guy to ignore my son and at worst for him to give a reply laced with malice.   How wrong I was. While I stood there berating myself for not teaching my child about social taboos, I experienced a sweet human exchange.  This man did not hold contempt for my curious child. He bent down and looked my son in the eye and replied, “Nope, that would have been cool, right? No fight, just born this way.” My son scrunched up his nose and exclaimed, “bummer.” I could hear it in his voice that he really meant this. There was my son looking back into this man’s eyes, offering a sincere, empathetic understanding that this guy somehow had been shortchanged. I could also see how this empathy was received and appreciated by the man. My parental shame was quickly replaced by awe and recognition of the blessing of connection that had just taken place.   My son then asked the man to sit with us at our table and proceeded to ask multi-layered questions about life with only one arm. Some of the inquiries were quite personal and made me a bit uncomfortable, but they did not phase our new friend. He answered with candor and tenderness. Between bites of his cone, he displayed deep vulnerability and authentically shared with us what it was like to be him.    I think about this meeting often as it was such a precious glimpse as to how fully the reign of God on earth can be experienced when we disregard worldly convention and allow ourselves to be vulnerable with one another. It has impressed upon me the importance of vulnerability and its role in knowing God and each other with more depth.   And what better example of vulnerability is there than a newborn in a manger? That’s correct, we have a God who knows what it takes to be vulnerable – a God that chose to break into this world as a babe fully dependent on others for nourishment and protection. A God that continued to impart lessons of vulnerability through the cities, the countryside, the mountains and finally on the hill of death. We have a vulnerable God.    Do not make the mistake of interchanging weak or powerless with vulnerable. We do not have an impotent God. We have a God that is Almighty, yet also a God of grace and openness. A God of revelation and relationship that opens Divine arms to us and yearns for us to nestle into them to be cherished and cradled.    As we anticipate the birth of Jesus, let us think about what it means to be vulnerable. What does it mean to be dependent and reliant on God for nourishment and protection? What does it look like to be vulnerable with one another? Can we experience the reign of God more fully if we let go of our walls, insecurities, and coping mechanisms and learn to be authentically present with our neighbor?   Ever-open, ever-powerful God, we pray for the courage to follow your lessons of vulnerability. Teach us to be a babe in a manger, trusting that you will provide for us. Guide us to be as open to others as you are with us. Amen.
