SPAM FAQ
The following FAQ attempts to explain what SPAM is, what you should know about it, and what Saint Paul School of Theology does to control it.
What is SPAM? The simplest definition of is that SPAM is unsolicited email. This is usually email that is used for advertising. Spam can also contain viruses.
How Are Email Addresses Obtained by Spammers? There are many different ways that spammers may obtain your email address. If you sign up for a newsletter, the newsletter author may sell the email addresses of everyone who signed up for the newsletter to a spammer. If you forward email to large numbers of persons, all of those email addresses may eventually end up in a spammers hands as more and more forwarding continues through other persons. Email addresses listed on web sites or in newsgroups are easy targets for spammers. Spammers are also known to "guess" email addresses.
Saint Paul School of Theology does not sell or give out email addresses of any student, faculty, staff or administrator other than those listed on the Saint Paul web site. If you get spam at your Saint Paul email address, the spammer obtained your email address through some other means.
How Do I Protect Myself? Be especially careful about who you give your email address to and what email newsletters, etc. you sign up for. Always carefully read the privacy policy of the newsletter before giving out your email address. Also be extremely careful when filling out forms and surveys, again carefully reading the privacy policys of the web sites where you are filling the information out.
Exercise caution when forwarding emails on to other persons. By forwarding email with lots of other email addresses attached and forwarding on to your entire address book (or large portions of your address book) can put other persons email addresses at risk of ending up in a spammer hands. If you have to forward that joke, copy and paste the joke into a new email instead of perpetuating the forwarding of email addresses.
What can help you the most in avoiding spam is to exercise common sense when using email.
What Does Saint Paul School of Theology Do to Eliminate Spam? The Saint Paul School of Theology email system utilizes several techniques to keep spam and viruses to a minimum. Saint Paul is in the process of implementing new security measures that should help do a better job of keeping spam and viruses to a minimum.
Again, Saint Paul School of Theology does not sell or give out email addresses of any student, faculty, staff or administrator. If you get spam at your Saint Paul email address, the spammer obtained your email address through some other means.
