The Board of Trustees has named Rev. H. Sharon Howell as Interim President of Saint Paul School of Theology. Rev. Howell will begin on July 1, 2014 and will serve while the work of the seminary's Presidential Search Committee continues.

Saint Paul Board Chair Twila Glenn said, "The Board is delighted that Rev. Howell is able to join us as we continue to create at Saint Paul a new kind of theological education. Rev. Howell will have full responsibility for all internal operations, the seminary's collaborations, and all external relationships. We are fortunate to have such an experienced leader, and one who is so well-connected within the United Methodist Church, step into this position."

Rev. Howell returns to the seminary with a multitude of experiences. She is a graduate of Saint Paul School of Theology and a former staff member.  She is experienced at leadership in large and complex organizations, having served as Senior Pastor at First United Methodist Church in Lawrence during the time it developed a second site West Campus and built the first facility called the Celebration Center. She retired in December 2012 after serving for seven years as President of Scarritt-Bennett Center in Nashville, TN. Rev. Howell served for seven years as district superintendent and was elected a General and Jurisdictional delegate from the Kansas East Conference. She was a member of and served a term as President of the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women in the United Methodist Church. Upon her return to Kansas, First United Methodist Church in Lawrence celebrated her retirement with a Pastor Emerita honor.

H. Sharon Howell is passionate about Saint Paul School of Theology and names her time at Saint Paul as a life-shaping experience. Upon accepting the position, Howell said, "My eighteen months of retirement have given me time for reflection, reading, and renewal. Only Saint Paul School of Theology could call me out of retirement. The hundreds of alumni/ae who have served and currently serve faithfully and effectively across the world, current students, and those who are on their way to Saint Paul but don't know it yet, were the voices that spoke to me.

Saint Paul School of Theology Board, faculty, staff and friends have undertaken a radical move into the 21st century with a new curriculum for a new day and new locations in Greater Kansas City and Oklahoma City. I am humbled to be asked to provide transitional leadership as the Interim President while the work of the Presidential Search Committee continues. I am grateful for the invitation from the Board of Trustees and share their commitment to a vital and vibrant future for Saint Paul."
