The United Methodist Candidacy Process is an important and exciting journey as you begin your ministry.
Steps Into the United Methodist Candidacy Process
The candidate, along with a candidacy mentor, will study resources determined by the conference Board of Ordained Ministry based on the candidate's statement of call, Wesley's historic questions found in Paragraph 310 of The Book of Discipline, and questions about formative experiences, the role of the church, Christian beliefs and personal gifts for ministry, which are listed in Paragraph 311.3.b and c. There is a required completion and release of psychological assessment reports, criminal background and credit checks during the process. For a full listing of requirements click on the GBHEM web site.
General Conference Shortens Candidacy Process
The candidacy process for ordained ministry in The United Methodist Church will be shortened by two years beginning in January 2009, under legislation approved by the 2008 General Conference. "Steps were taken to shorten and expedite the process and make it more accessible," said the Rev. Sharon Rubey, director of Candidacy and Conference Relations at the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry.
Your Seminary Journey
The journey into ministry is filled with challenges, rewards, and important decisions. One decision you may face is that of choosing a seminary. Let us share with you a little about one choice, Saint Paul School of Theology.
The movement begun by John Wesley and other reformers has led millions to Christ and has sparked the fire of social renewal. Clearly, John Wesley was not only a person of faith and passion, but also one of reason and intellect. At Saint Paul, we expect a similar integration -- between the spiritual and the scholarly -- in both our students and our faculty. That is why we have created a unique curriculum, one that throughout weaves together theory and practice.
Our students represent all ages, and come from 38 annual conferences, 35 states, and 20 other denominations. Our faculty are scholars and spiritual leaders of the first rank. Under their careful mentorship, Saint Paul students prepare for positions of leadership that will revitalize the church.
Saint Paul School of Theology is one of thirteen United Methodist seminaries. We are located in Kansas City, Missouri, and on the Oklahoma City University campus in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and are committed to educating leaders for the church. Currently, over 85% of our graduates are serving in the parish-the highest number of any of the United Methodist seminaries.
